Landscape research in the upper part of the Vjosa River valley 2009-2010. The survey of the upper part of the Vjosa River valley represents an important landscape research project carried out by FoAP. It was undertaken in two phases during the years 2009-2010. During a preliminary survey undertaken by FoAP project in 2009, a number of known historical sites were recorded, evaluated and correctly located within the landscape, including the cave settlement of Bёnjё, prehistoric and Medieval tumuli of Piskovё, Rrapckё and Grabovё, the ancient fortifications of Kёlcyrё and Kuqar, the Byzantine churches of Saint Ilia at Buhal and Saint Mary in Kosinё, the post-Byzantine churches of Leusё and Bёnjё, etc. Spatial analyses of the new survey data in the GIS, combined with other historical and geographical data, indicated the richness of the Vjosa Valley in terms of heritage assets as well as the potential survival of numerous, currently unknown sites. The upper reaches of the Vjosa river valley were, therefore, selected as a pilot study area for applying and testing a series of GIS predictive models to potentially identify new archaeological sites and monuments. Field survey of Shkodra and Malёsia e Madhe districts, 2009. In October 2009, FoAP undertook a wide ranging field survey within the territories of Shkodra and Malёsia e Madhe districts. This project was carried out in collaboration with Shkodra Historical Museum. The survey aimed to record, evaluate and spatially locate surviving archaeological remains and historical buildings located within these territories. During one month of survey, 46 archaeological sites and historical monuments were re-evaluated, including fortifications, churches, cemeteries, settlements, bridges, houses, etc., dating from prehistory to the ottoman period. Through utilizing GPS technology, the precise location of investigated sites was possible, allowing tight integration of the survey data with the project’s GIS. During the survey, complete plans were made for the first time of a number of monuments, including the fortification of Vorfa, the church of Zues and the church of Grizhё, medieval settlement of Dedaj, and Gjodedё. Corrections were also made to a number of existing plans, such as the castrum of Vig and the fortifications of Ganjollё, Kratul, Marshej, Mokset, etc. For more information, please download the FoAP survey report. |
